ABOUT US
OUR STORY
Taiga Treats is a small family that wants to supply high quality ice cream to their community.
Recently, I spent part of a summer scooping ice cream in my neighborhood. I learned a lot about myself, my community and global events going on around me just by asking travelers how they were doing each day.
I truly enjoyed the opportunity to connect with so many people. I learned their stories, I heard about their families, I developed friendships with people who work hard to make the community a better place.
I do not always work well being employed by others. I decided to forge my own business with my husband and daughters.
Our family moved to Alaska in 2022 from Southern Oregon. We wanted to run away to learn how to be wild things. We found a niche that feels right at the edge of the world in our own small taiga wetlands.
As we have experienced several seasons in the wild, we have noticed how much our presence, our building, our infrastructure, each choice we make as land owners majorly effects every lifeform in our ecosystem.
There are many wild moose, cranes, eagles, birds, foxes, coyotes and lynx that use wild lands around us as the seasons change. We have been doing our best to create wildlife corridors throughout our property to redirect wildlife away from dogs, traffic or dangerous areas.
We try to steward the earth by imitating the way the animals behave. Beavers and birds gather sticks, pebbles mud & straw. Any brush pile can become something great. We stack deadwood branches & yard trimmings in wall shapes along tributaries. These "wonderwalls" define simple paths with many berries that become appealing for wild beasts to travel. As the walls rot, seeds & spores grow into new medicinal & edible plants. Plant roots and mycellium actually eat toxic waste out of the water. The wonderwall naturally filters toxic pollutants from our ecosystem. A wonderwall, like a beaver dam wicks water into land in a way that protects a forested region from wildfires.
These wonderwalls have the potential to provide food, medicine, & clean water for all of humanity if used wisely. Leaving a simple pile of sticks at the edge of your woods actually helps heal nature just a little bit.
Northern tribes believe that all that grows on the surface of the earth is a form of medicine. During the summer, the earth is like an open hand, with enough abundance for all to feast. In the winter, the earth becomes like a hard fist that opens for none. That is why, in some northern tribes, true wealth is measured by the amount of & the variety of wild plants each family harvests under the sun.
We want to try to honor that belief. We want to cherish the taiga & try to help the wild things survive the best we can.
We also think its really fun making homemade ice cream & want to share the abundance with our neighbors.
